Imbolc
midway between the winter solstice and spring equinox
The beginning of February gives us Imbolc, or the feast of St Brigid, patron saint of Ireland, who is associated with healing, poetry and smithcraft. Imbolc is the halfway point between winter solstice and spring equinox. That feels about right… I pray that we have passed the darkest hour, and with our words and actions we can forge a path to the healing green of spring.
I remain hopeful, but wary.
I’ve spent the winter so far bouncing around between Portland OR, Mexico City and Brazil, where it is the middle of summer and getting close to Carnival. This video is from the city of Recife, where bands from across northeastern Brazil gather to practice and prepare.

I’m home in Portland tonight, but in ten days I head back to the Southern Hemisphere to play music, with tours in New Zealand and Australia.
