well here we are and it’s anybody’s guess where we’re headed.
I have a new song up on Bandcamp, inspired by these words from James Baldwin;
'The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.'
I live next door to a school and the sound of kids playing runs through my daily life. As I was working on this song I realized that when I listened back through headphones there was a silence at the heart of the piece, but when I listened back on speakers, the sound of the kids playing blew in through the window and I understood that this was the center around which the song revolves.
This song is part of a larger series called Across the Horizon, which also features a track I did in collaboration with Nashville pedal steel wiz Luke Schneider, as well as ambient tracks by Charlie Parr in his group portal iii and lots more.
I have another week here in Mexico City, and then I’ll be heading home to Portland to get ready for spring.
Sunday February 23 I’ll be in Austin TX with Jim White playing a duo set at Interference Fest 2025 at the 29th St Ballroom, click the link for tix and info.
March 1 you can find me at the Red Fox in Portland spinning records with my partner in crime, Eric Isaacson from Mississippi Records. This is our second annual DJ night, and just like last year, I’ll mostly be playing music from records I picked up in Mexico City over the last several weeks, as well as in previous years. Come out and say hi if you happen to be in Portland that night.
This event is free but I will have a tip jar out with all donations going to benefit Portland’s IRCO ( Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization).
That’s it for now, more show announcements coming in March. Til then, stay safe and stay sane. xo
Gorgeous song, Marisa. I love the collaboration with the kids.
I love this! Glad you're doing a substack.
